Evaporative Cooler Overflowing or Water Running Constantly? Find the Faulty Part

CoolBreeze Float Switch Magnetic #SP2210 – evaporative cooler part

Water running off the roof or a drain that never stops wastes water and money, and it usually points to one small, inexpensive part. Use the table below to narrow it down before you buy anything.

Symptom checker

What you see Most likely part Shop
Water overflowing from the cooler while it is running Float valve not shutting off (worn washer, stuck arm or waterlogged float) Float valves
Water keeps flowing after the cooler is turned off Inlet solenoid stuck open Solenoid valves
Water running to drain while the cooler is filling Drain or dump valve stuck open, or a worn seal Drain & dump valves
A small, steady trickle from a thin tube Bleed-off – often normal, it removes salts Check the bleed setting first
Water dripping from the pads or cabinet edges Damaged pad, blocked distributor or a cracked tray Filter pads

How to check the float valve

With the power off, lift the float arm by hand. The water should stop. If it doesn’t, the valve seat or washer is worn. If it stops but the water level runs too high, the float may need adjusting or may be waterlogged. Float valves are cheap, and replacing a worn one is usually better than adjusting it.

How to tell if the solenoid is stuck open

Turn the cooler off at the controller. Water should stop entering the cooler within a few seconds. If it keeps flowing, the solenoid isn’t closing. Grit from the water supply is the usual cause. Read our solenoid valve guide to choose the right replacement.

Drain and dump valves

Many coolers empty the tray at shutdown or at set intervals. If the valve or its seal is worn, water runs to drain while the cooler is trying to fill, so the tray never fills properly and the pads stay dry. Bonaire coolers with Aquamiser and H2O Optimiser systems, and Breezair coolers with 24VAC or 12VDC drain valves, all have specific replacement parts.
